Jeremy Youde, ‘Confronting Africa’s Health Challenges’, in Jack Mangala, ed., New Security Threats and Crises in Africa: Regional and International Perspectives, New York: Palgrave Macmillan, 2010, pp. 129-46.

Are sick people as big a threat to the stability and security of Sub-Saharan Africa as arms proliferation and civil conflict? This chapter seeks to offer an understanding of the current state of the debate over the relationship between health and security in Africa. To do this, I will examine how the role of health in security politics has changed, how scholars and policymakers have assessed the nature of this relationship, and the consequences they have foretold.
