This talk will outline the results of a long-term research project into Xi Jinping’s foreign policy. Using a new framework that analyses which foreign policy statements can be considered authoritative, and a comprehensive database of all of Xi Jinping’s and Hu Jintao’s authoritative foreign policy statements, the talk will highlight the major shift in China’s foreign policy under the Xi Jinping administration. The geographic direction, ideology, and policy implications of Xi’s foreign policy shift will also be discussed.
