Richard Eves’ recent fieldwork in Bougainville advances SSGM’s collaboration with the International Women’s Development Agency (IWDA) on women’s economic empowerment. SSGM’s Gender, Health, Social Development and Migration cluster is contributing to this study as part of the DFAT grant, Do No Harm: Understanding the Relationship Between Women’s Economic Empowerment and Violence Against Women in Melanesia. In Bougainville, Richard worked with three local researchers, Steven Simiha, Ireen Subalik and Genenieve Kouro. Ireen and Genenieve were trained in qualitative research methods last year when Richard collaborated with the Bougainville Women’s Federation and IWDA on research on young women’s leadership and the impediments to greater participation. The Do No Harm research used in-depth interviews to explore the ways families manage their domestic economies and what conflicts occur money within families.
