US Ambas­sador John Berry ‘complicated’ matters: experts

A public spat between China and the US about Beijing’s political ­influence in Australia indicates the deep concern about the shifting power balance in the region, experts say.

Beijing responded to “unprecedented” comments from out­going US ambas­sador John Berry, who expressed alarm about the extent of China’s involvement in Australian polit­ics, by accusing him of “troublemaking”.

Michael Wesley, the director of the Coral Bell school of Asia-Pacific Affairs at the Australian National University, said he did not think the ambassador’s comments were appropriate.
