Thailand’s external security policy is mostly considered in terms of its traditionally astute foreign policy. The Thai military’s role in external security has been less well studied, especially by comparison with its role in politics. This podcast, draws on Dr Greg Raymond's PhD research, offering an account of Thailand’s strategic culture: its enduring politico-military thinking about how to deal with the threat of force in the international environment. With the addition of analysis of the Thai military’s organisational culture and Thai civil-military relations, strategic culture offers one way to explain why the Thai military has often achieved strategic success but at the same time, has struggled to maximise proficiency in state-on-state conventional operations.
