While election manifestos are a major topic of research, cross-national research on manifestos in Asia is virtually non-existent. Drawing on 77 manifestos from six Asian countries, this presentation first examines how parties use manifestos, including to appeal to voters and maintain party and coalition cohesion. It will then focus in particular on the different social groups parties explicitly address in their manifestos.

Sebastian Dettman is a Lecturer in Public Policy at the University of Melbourne. He researches elections, governance, and democratisation in ethnically diverse societies, with a focus on Southeast Asia. His recent research has appeared in journals including Democratisation, Journal of Contemporary Asia, and Journal of Current Southeast Asian Affairs.
