This monograph raises issues not usually discussed in the debate about the Australian-American alliance: the nature of political support of the alliance; the implications of the alliance for national security policy; the effects of the alliance on the Australian Defence Force (ADF); and its effects on national freedom of action.
The author examines the costs and benefits of the alliance and argues that its ending is both desirable and inevitable, as Australian national security policy evolved through self-reliance towards independence.
