US Ambassador John Berry ‘complicated’ matters: experts
A public spat between China and the US about Beijing’s political influence in Australia indicates the deep concern about the shifting power balance in the region, experts say.
Beijing responded to “unprecedented” comments from outgoing US ambassador John Berry, who expressed alarm about the extent of China’s involvement in Australian politics, by accusing him of “troublemaking”.
Michael Wesley, the director of the Coral Bell school of Asia-Pacific Affairs at the Australian National University, said he did not think the ambassador’s comments were appropriate.
