Attack on Pakistan police academy shows reach of Islamic State
It is believed ISIS may have carried out the attack in conjunction with a Pakistani militant group, Lashkar-e-Jhangvi.
Reporters on the scene said one of the dead militants — the one who hadn’t detonated his suicide vest — resembled one of the men in the Amaq photograph.
William Maley of the Australian National University told The Australian that with ISIS under heavy attack in Iraq and Syria this was a way the group could send a message it was not a spent force.
“Attacks elsewhere in the world are a way in which they can signal they have many irons in the fire and simply eliminating them from Mosul is no guarantee they won’t be able to undertake activities in other parts of the world,” Professor Maley said.
