There were two major surprises in Indonesia€™s parliamentary elections last week. Firstly, the disappointing outcome for Megawati Sukarnoputri€™s PDI-P. Secondly, the better than expected showing for Islamic parties.

In this video, New Mandala's Dr Ross Tapsell interviews Associate Professor Greg Fealy and political analyst Usman Hamid about the results of the Indonesian parliamentary elections.

The three discuss why the 'Jokowi effect' was over-estimated by pollsters and pundits alike, why the favourites, the Indonesian Democratic Party-Struggle, won only 19 per cent of the vote, and the surprisingly strong showing of Islamic parties.

They also examine what will happen next, with a focus on what a likely PDI-P led coalition might look like, and the impact of this vote on the presidential elections on 9 July.
