"That is what the terrorists want": Media as amplifier of violent extremist propaganda
On 16 June 2017, Dr. Haroro Ingram presented at a workshop held by L’École nationale de la magistrature (ENM) in Paris about whether and how media reporting may act as an amplifier of violent extremist propaganda aims.
In his presentation, Dr. Ingram argues that an independent, assertive, responsible and critically engaged media is the best weapon democracies have against violent extremist propaganda. However, depending on the nature of reporting, the media can also be used by violent extremists to amplify their messaging. Dr. Ingram’s presentation highlights they ways in which reporting fuels extremist propaganda and gives recommendations on how to disrupt it instead.
