About the journal
Security Challenges is the only peer-reviewed journal on future security issues published in Australia.
The journal reaches a wide audience of government, corporate and academic experts and our members. It is a vehicle for innovative thinking about future challenges to the security (broadly defined) of Australia and the region.
The Special Issue will address the importance of enhancing women’s participation and leadership in national security-related policy and decision making, implementation and practice; women as actors and receivers of national security in the defence and security context, the gender based peace dividend, and Government and private sector priorities in the context of the Defence White Paper, Cyber Security Strategy and foreign policy.
Topics of interest of this Special Issue include, but are not limited to the following aspects of Women’s Leadership and National Security:
How to increase female participation in decision making and leadership in national security fields across public policy and practitioner, private sector and academic spheres.
Mainstreaming of gender and gender considerations in foreign and security policy.
Why the women peace and security agenda (UNSCR1325) matters and what Australia is doing about it. And possible US approaches in a President Trump era.
Women at the table as peace negotiators, builders and peacekeepers - drawing on lived experiences from conflicts and overseas deployments.
What do smart companies know about women and better decision making? Senior panels from the public and private sectors and across disciplines will share experiences, insights, best practice research and strategies on increasing women’s involvement.
What is Government, academia and defence industry’s plan to better harness women? Media portrayals of senior women in national security.
Women and violent extremism - ISIS.
Submission Format and Guideline
Security Challenges welcomes submissions from any source. Early career scholars and new strategic thinkers are particularly encouraged to submit. Authors working in eligible Australian academic institutions can claim HERDC funding from DEST (“DEST points”) for articles in Security Challenges.
Authors are strongly encouraged to submit manuscripts via email to editor@ifrs.org.au, preferably in MS Word format. Please write Women’s Leadership and National Security edition in the subject line. The receipt of manuscripts will be acknowledged within 7 days. The journal will contain comments and opinions as well as regular articles.
The recommended length for comments is 1000-3000 words. Comments must accord to academic standards, but can draw more heavily on personal experience and generally relate to issues of current practical interest. The recommended length for articles is 4000-7000 words. The word count does not include footnotes, which should be placed at the bottom of each page.
An abstract of no more than 100 words and an “about the author” note of no more than 50 words should accompany the submission. The author’s name and affiliation must not appear on the copies submitted, but only on a separate covering sheet. All parts of the manuscript should be type-written, double-spaced, with margins of at least one inch on all sides. The manuscript pages should be numbered consecutively throughout the paper.
Each manuscript must be accompanied by a statement that it has not been published elsewhere and that it has not been submitted simultaneously for publication elsewhere. Authors are responsible for obtaining permission to reproduce copyrighted material from other sources and are required to sign an agreement for the transfer of copyright to the publisher.
All articles considered for publication are required to undergo peer-review by independent referees, whereby the anonymity of the author of the article is preserved. The anonymity of referees, whose comments are forwarded to the authors, is likewise preserved. The review process normally takes about 4-8 weeks.
The editors are responsible for the selection and acceptance of articles; the opinions expressed in articles published and the accuracy of statements made therein are solely the responsibility of the individual authors. The editor disclaims responsibility for statements, either of fact or opinion, made by the contributors. The editors retain the right to condense articles and reviews.
Authors receive three free copies of the issue in which their article/comment/opinion appears as well as an electronic version of their piece in PDF-format.
A detailed style guide for Security Challenges can be found here. It is the author’s responsibility to ensure that the submitted manuscript complies with the style guide. The editors reserve the right to reject manuscripts which do not accurately follow form and style requirements.
