Prof Jochen Prantl

Jochen Prantl is Professor of International Relations and Associate Dean International at the ANU College of Asia and the Pacific. He was Director of the Asia-Pacific College of Diplomacy in 2015-16, and Deputy Director (International Engagement) in 2017-18 for the Coral Bell School of Asia Pacific Affairs. He is an expert on international security, polycentric governance, complex systems thinking, and strategy and statecraft. In collaboration with Professor Evelyn Goh, he co-leads the Strategic Diplomacy: Rethinking Strategy and Statecraft for the 21st Century of Complexity research, teaching, and executive training program at ANU. He is the Chair of the Global Transformation Initiative of the International Alliance of Research Universities (IARU), a network of eleven international research-intensive universities from nine countries across the globe. The IARU Members are the Australian National University, ETH Zurich, National University of Singapore, Peking University, University of California, Berkeley, University of Cambridge, University of Cape Town, University of Copenhagen, University of Oxford, the University of Tokyo, and Yale University.

Dr Prantl's major research projects have been funded by the UK Economic and Social Research Council, the Australian Research Council Discovery Grant, the S.T. Lee Foundation, and research grants from the British Academy, the MacArthur Foundation, and the Australian Department of Defence.

Previously, he held positions in the Department of Politics and International Relations, and Nuffield College, University of Oxford, and the Lee Kuan Yew School of Public Policy, National University of Singapore. He also served as Acting Director of Oxford’s Centre for International Studies. In 2007, Dr Prantl was the inaugural recipient of the Zvi Meitar/Vice-Chancellor Oxford University Research Prize in the Social Sciences, and in 2008, the University's nominee for the AXA Prize for Innovative Research.

Jochen Prantl held visiting and teaching appointments at Yale University, the German Council on Foreign Relations, Waseda University, the S. Rajaratnam School of International Studies, and the University of Brasilia. His policy experience includes stints in the Policy Planning Unit of the UN Department of Political Affairs and the European Union Delegation to the United Nations in New York. Prior to his academic career, he worked in financial services with Allianz SE. He is Senior Research Fellow in the Earth System Governance global research alliance and non-resident Visiting Fellow of the Earth System Governance Research Centre in Brazil, hosted by the International Relations Institute (IREL) at the University of Brasilia.

Dr Prantl holds degrees in Political Science (M.A.) from the University of Bonn and International Relations (M.A.; D.Phil.) from the University of Oxford.
