Why study this program

The Master of Diplomacy equips you with the knowledge and skills for understanding diplomatic practices in international affairs, while positioning you at the centre of a global network of leading scholars and policymakers.

ANU is the only institution in the southern hemisphere that offers a dedicated postgraduate degree in diplomacy. Studying at ANU gives you access to the engine room of international affairs with the federal government, embassies and international agencies based in Canberra at our doorstep. Relevant to students and diplomatic practitioners from diverse backgrounds and interests, our program brings an international, inter-disciplinary perspective to the classroom.

The learning experience

The Master of Diplomacy provides exciting study and career options. You will be taught by globally recognised scholars from the Department of International Relations and have the opportunity to engage with senior diplomats from Australia and beyond.

The IR Department is home to a global network of high-profile practitioners, attracting visits from leading scholars and policymakers. This experience with practitioners, alongside academic courses in diplomacy, provides a blend of theory and practice that is unparalleled in Australia.

Internships

A vibrant and exciting internship program is offered for successful students. Students have access to a range of internships with international and local NGOs, Australian government departments, the private sector, embassies and the broader ANU community.  Internships are awarded for course credit on a competitive basis and are unpaid. Students may also arrange their own internships, subject to departmental approval, and all students have access to ANU ANIP program. 

Career opportunities

The program is ideal for careers in public policy, global governance, international law and trade. Our Master of Diplomacy students have gone on to become ambassadors, senior staff in foreign ministries, academics, and leading figures at international organisations and transnational corporations.

Deepak's research focuses on the microsociological study of international relations. Everyday practices, face-to-face interactions, emotions, and embodied experiences are the small units of analysis that take centrestage in his research.
