Projects / Initiatives

The Architectures for Peace Lab (A4P Lab) is home to a community of scholars, students and policymakers seeking to deepen and expand our understandings of the connections between material infrastructure and peace processes.

We ally political geography considerations, architecture studies, international relations as well as a focus on the Asia-Pacific, to bring innovative ideas and reflect on methodological and programmatic challenges on the ground. The A4P Lab’s goal is to foster a truly interdisciplinary perspective to the question of how the material infrastructure can impede or facilitate peace processes, with an interest in urbanistic designs, mapping and counter-mapping strategies and how the infrastructure of military interventions impact peace processes.

The A4P Lab is based at The Australian National University, and more precisely at the Coral Bell School of Asia-Pacific Affairs, a world-leading research school for the study of Asia-Pacific and international politics.

The A4P Lab at ANU is part of the Carter School Global Peace Labs Network including five Peace Labs in the Carter School for Peace and Conflict Resolution, one at York University in the UK, and an additional two Peace Labs in Japan and Korea joining the network in 2025.

A launch event for the A4P Lab will be held, as a one day event, with a keynote speech and 2 roundtables on architectural approaches to peace.

The keynote speaker will be Dr Alpaslan Ozerdem, Dean of the Jimmy and Rosalynn Carter School for Peace and Conflict Resolution at George Mason University.

The launch will also use synergies with a workshop organised through the ARC Discovery Project on the Cartography of Peace , as we will have three international colleagues in Canberra at that time.

If you are interested in attending, we suggest applying for APSA Annual Workshop Funding Scheme 2025 ($11k) to support the costs of attending this event.

Bi-monthly meetings

We propose to conduct meetings every two months to discuss research strategies, to workshop papers and to discuss funding opportunities.
