Housing policies, laws and legislations play a key role in determining who has access to adequate housing. New Zealand has ratified the international convention on the rights to adequate housing. Despite this, evidence indicates that the rights of Pacific peoples (including Tongan) to adequate housing has not been met. The poor housing conditions of Pacific peoples, have been informed by institutions and systems that condone structural violence often informed by neoliberal and capitalist policies on wealth distribution, exacerbating poor housing conditions and poor health outcomes. Addressing poor housing policies and housing conditions will help reduce inequitable housing related diseases among Pacific peoples in New Zealand.
