Grounded study of Asia’s civil-military relations is overdue. In this new edited volume, Alan Chong and Nicole Jenne argue that Asian civil-military relations should be analysed under the concept of Asian military evolutions. Civil-military relations has conventionally been derived as an important subject because it addresses the viability of a democracy when it has to control its ‘armed guardian’. CMR is increasingly recognised as a key component of strategies to deal with Asia’s security agendas. Asian Military Evolutions contains 13 country studies — this seminar will feature five chapter authors as well as a discussion by two experts from the Coral Bell School of Asia Pacific Affairs (ANU).
